My name is Yvette Dalia Gutierrez, and my journey with Madera Adult School at Madera Unified School District began September 30, 2021 at 8:30am. I am the oldest out of five siblings and I’m considered a first generation Mexican American. I am not only an employee for MUSD, I am a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, softball coach, dance choreographer, there are many roles I play on a weekly basis, but the most important role to me is the role of a mother. I have two beautiful children my daughter Brianna and my son Cain.

I was born and raised in Madera California. I grew up on what is considered the “EAST SIDE OF TOWN”. I would never change growing up side of town because I believe that this upbringing has made me the woman I am today. I grew up with the honking sounds a farm labor vans picking up my father and neighbors surrounding. As I would watch my father leave early in the morning for work I knew the sacrifices he was making for us. My child hood did not come with materialistic comforts but it came with life learning lessons which now I acknowledge as discipline, respect, dedication, and dreams to come true.

I began working at the age of 16, I have gained experiences, and skills throughout many of my employments, which have, lead me to my current position as Attendance Secretary for the Madera Adult School. When I first arrived to my current position, I did not know what to expect. I remember asking myself “Do I belong here?” I asked God to guide me and teach me the reason why he placed me in this path.

Almost a year later, I now understand that this is exactly where I am to meant to be. I’m blessed to see many eager faces to learn, to better themselves for their children. Working with adult students makes, you realize that they are here because they want to be here. Attending class to better their English, enrolling into computer literacy to better their computer skills to help their little ones with homework, obtaining a HiSet certificate because they want to attend college and chase that dream are some of the many reasons I love being here. I enjoy the excitement every time a Citizenship student becomes a US Citizen and encourages his/her peers “Si yo pude ustedes tambien” are some of the words that come out of their mouth. I get to meet wonderful students like Jacob Peterson who in the little time that I have known him he has taught me that if you really want it, it does not matter how you are going to get there but you will get there. I love that our school is represented by the Phoenix Bird which is the symbol for immortality, resurrection and life after death. I learned that in greek mythology the Phoenix is associated with the sun God. I personally associate the sun to brightness and light. I see all of that in almost every student that walks through these halls and I see my parents whom became US Citizens, and I cannot help but to see my father leaving early in the morning to give us a better future. I see my father in every student that walks in because they’re here for that same reason. A BRIGHTER FUTURE!
